Park and ride schemes provide car parking at a location on the outskirts of a city, paired with a direct public transport connection into the centre, allowing drivers to cover the longer, less congested part of a journey by car before switching to transport better suited to a busy urban core.

This arrangement suits people who live somewhere public transport does not reach conveniently but still want to avoid driving directly into a congested, expensive to park city centre, capturing some of the benefits of public transport for the final leg of a trip without requiring a full door to door service.

For a park and ride scheme to work well, the public transport connection needs to be frequent, reliable and genuinely faster than continuing to drive, since the whole arrangement only delivers its intended benefit if switching modes partway through a journey actually saves the traveller meaningful time overall.
