Why Ground Level Ozone Forms on Hot Days

Ground level ozone is not emitted directly. It forms when sunlight drives a chemical reaction between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, both common in vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions. Heat accelerates this reaction, which is why ozone readings tend to climb on still, sunny afternoons rather than overnight.
This makes ozone different from most pollutants people think about. There is no single ozone pipe or chimney to point to, because the gas is a byproduct of other emissions mixing in sunlight over hours. Reducing it means reducing its precursor gases, often from sources kilometres away from where the ozone eventually peaks.
The practical effect is a seasonal and time of day pattern. Ozone tends to be worse in warmer months and in the afternoon, easing overnight as the chemical reaction that produces it slows without sunlight. This is useful to know for anyone managing outdoor activity around respiratory sensitivity.
