Why Indoor Air Can Be Worse Than Outdoor Air

Modern buildings are often sealed tightly for energy efficiency, which keeps conditioned air in but also traps pollutants that would otherwise disperse outdoors. Cooking, cleaning products, mould, dust mites and off gassing from furniture or paint can all accumulate steadily in a space with limited air exchange.

Ventilation is the main variable that decides how these pollutants build up or clear. A well ventilated home exchanges indoor air with outdoor air regularly, diluting contaminants, while a tightly sealed home with little airflow allows the same sources to reach far higher concentrations over time.

Simple habits make a real difference here: opening windows when outdoor air quality is reasonable, using exhaust fans during cooking, and choosing lower emission paints and furnishings. None of these require special equipment, just an awareness that indoor air quality is actively managed, not automatically fine. Treating indoor air as something to actively look after, rather than assuming it is clean simply because a door is closed, is the underlying shift in thinking that helps most.
